Orfebreria Sapos de Gallega

They are called sapos, that means toads, because they have several linked bodies, similar to the animal. They are traditional jewelry used for dressing that for centuries constituted a symbol of prestige. They passed from generation to generation and were worn at social events or special parties. Some designs, called gala, were used to adorn themselves on special occasions and others, called cotio, which comes from everyday, which used to be worn daily.

Although it is difficult to establish a time frame in the appearance of the different models of jewelry of this type (dated between the 18th century and the first quarter of the 20th century), they say that the origin of the  toad earrings can be in the breastplates used in the s. XVIII or jewels of several pieces and large size crimped together that women used to wear as pendants.

The most typical materials to make them are silver and gilt silver, combined with jet, gold or coral. Earrings, necklaces or brooches are made with them.

They are part of the folklore of the north of the peninsula, especially Galicia and Asturias, and are linked to the muiñeira. This brings traditional designs to this day, thanks to groups that preserve costumes, ornaments and regional dances that do a special job for preserve cultural assets such as the Galician costume.

Thanks to the Camino de Santiago, different places share culture and tradition. This also occurs in goldsmithing, since designs of toads with filigree shapes are repeated in earrings, rings, bracelets, pendants,... both in Galicia and in the north of the Peninsula, Andalusia or even Portugal where you will see that the Brincos da Rainha, Heart of Viana,… they have the same shape as Galician toad earrings.
